Mystery of mini explosion in east Mayo town uncovered

An investigation has identified the cause of a mini explosion that occurred in Ballaghaderreen town centre last Friday afternoon.

ESB crews have established that a short circuit in an underground cable caused the explosion which lifted a manhole.

The full story has been reported on the Ballaghaderreen twitter account.

It's welcome news to residents who had been left frightened following the incident on Main Street close to the Charlestown junction.

Emergency services, including gardai and the fire service as well as Roscommon County Council employees, attended the scene with over 70 premises left without electricity for a period, Shannonside Radio reported.

No injuries occurred and no major damage took place.
