Castlebar Lions Club looking for new members

Castlebar Lions Club is calling for new members to join after a tough two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like many voluntary organisations, much of their good work has been compounded due to the Covid pandemic and current members are looking for new people to inject some fresh ideas.

"It’s been pretty difficult the last two years," said secretary Danny Moran. "We couldn’t run any projects bar the Christmas Food Appeal, which was done online, and meetings were on Zoom."

The Castlebar Lions Club began in the late 1970s with close to 40 members at the time and down through the years they have done numerous charitable events, with their biggest each year the Christmas Food Appeal for St. Vincent de Paul. In addition, they do many projects throughout the year for the Mayo Roscommon Hospice - they were the initiation club, along with Westport Lions Club, for the project 25 years ago – as well as Rock Rose House, Castlebar Social Services, Mayo Academy of Performing Arts, Order of Malta, Chernobyl Children Support and many more.

They have supported local schools and sports club projects as well as organising quiz nights, golf classics, race nights and dinner nights for charitable causes as well as stewarding for events such as the Mayo Choral Festival.

Donal O’Shea, president, hopes to see younger people and women join the club and experience the benefit of being a part of the organisation.

"We want to get across to people what we do. We do get asked a lot ‘What do ye do?’ You get a great benefit and personal satisfaction from the Lions.”

Meetings with the Castlebar Lions Club take place in the TF Royal Hotel on the first Thursday of every month at 9 p.m. If you are interested, you can contact Donal on (087) 9004128.
