Up to 775 expressions of interest for Mayo affordable housing

A total of 775 expressions of interests have been received by Mayo County Council for affordable housing.

The authority had invited members of the public to respond to a survey in respect of the issue.

Tom Gilligan, director of services for housing, said the council is compiling a full analysis of the data ahead of tomorrow's housing strategic policy committee (SPC).

He added a revised application will then be forwarded to the department for affordable housing for Westport.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne, a member of the Housing SPC, said the high numbers responding to the survey underlined the huge need in the county.

He called on the county's three government TDs to ensure affordable housing schemes are put in place throughout the county.

However, he is concerned that it could be more than a decade before this need is addressed.
