Bed shortage crisis at Mayo hospital as Covid cases rise further

A total of 49 Covid patients are in care at Mayo University Hospital (MUH) today, a rise of seven over the past 24 hours.

However, ten new cases were admitted to the Castlebar facility yesterday.

It's the eighth highest figure for a healthcare facility in the country.

University Hospital Limerick has the highest with 63.

The figures were recorded by the HSE at 8 p.m. yesterday.

Galway University Hospital has 59 cases and Sligo University Hospital 27. There are nine cases in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

There is only one available general bed at MUH and all ICU beds are occupied.

Apart from the Covid issues at the Castlebar centre, 15 patients are being accommodated on trolleys due to bed shortages.

Eight of those are in the emergency department and seven in wards elsewhere.
