Mayo's new university and how our councillors can help it
by Auld Stock
Members of Mayo County Council have agreed to a proposal by Councillor Martin McLoughlin to seek a meeting with the management of the Atlantic Technological University in Castlebar.
It is only right and proper the council should be kept informed about what is happening at the university and its plans for the future.
The councillors represent the people of Mayo and are in a position of being able to help the university on a number of fronts.
The information about the university’s future plans appear to be rather sparse and the meeting with our Mayo councillors should clear the air and make for a better understanding between both parties.
It is only by closer cooperation between Mayo University, elected representatives and other interested bodies that the Castlebar centre will achieve its maximum potential.
Mayo University should be allowed to stand on its own feet, free from interference by the big boys on the educational scene in Galway.
That message must be hammered home by our Mayo councillors.
