Passing of former Castlebar soccer star 'Scobie' Moran is widely mourned
The death has occurred unexpectedly at his home of Michael ('Scobie') Moran, 7 Riverdale Court, Knockthomas, Castlebar, and formerly of Errew, Castlebar, and Luton UK.
Predeceased by his dad Michael, he will be sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Cathy (née McBride, Westport), son Stephen, daughters Kim and Sara, mother Josie Moran (neé Bourke, Errew), daughter-in-law Gemma, son-in-law Brian, cherished grandchildren Amelia, Ruairí and Addison, his sisters Marion Davis (Errew) and Lorraine Reape (Errew), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, uncle, aunts, relatives and many friends.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.
In his youth 'Scobie' played for Luton Town Football Club and, after moving with his family from England to live in Errew, he joined Breaffy GAA Club and played at midfield.
However, it was with Castlebar Celtic FC that he savoured his greatest sporting moments, winning the Connaught Junior Cup in 1985 and a number of Mayo League titles in his role as a centre-half in one of the club's finest-ever sides.
Before joining Celtic, he played for a number of seasons with Barcastle FC.
Following his retirement from the game, he turned his attention to coaching and managing teams at Celtic Park for a number of years.
Aged 60, Michael was a gifted painter by trade and he was well respected and loved by everyone.
He was very sociable and always enjoyed meeting up with friends, old and new.
One of his many interests was cooking and he loved preparing meals for his family and friends.
Most of all, he was a great family man and was very proud of his family.
Remains will repose in Kilcoyne's Funeral Home, Thomas Street, Castlebar, on Saturday from 5 until 7 p.m.
The funeral will leave Kilcoyne's Funeral Home on Sunday at 11.10 a.m., walking to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, arriving for Requiem Mass at 12 noon.
Afterwards he will be laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Newport Road, Castlebar.
May his gentle soul great in peace.
