Mayo football club's old kit gets new lease of life in Africa

A NO longer used kit from a football team in Mayo has received a new lease of life in Africa.

The distinct black and white stripes of Fahy Rovers, based in the rural hinterland between Westport and Newport, are now being proudly sported by footballers in South Sudan.

The club told the story of how the kit travelled from Fahy to Rumbek on its Facebook page.

'Our first team manager and all round club stalwart John Creaby went to very impressive lengths to ensure our old A team kit was reused in a sustainable and responsible manner.

'The old kit was surplus to requirements and instead of dumping 16 perfect usable jerseys John set about to find a way to ensure the kit found a new lease of life elsewhere.

'A little detective and research work locally led John to having a chat with Laura Hastings from Westport who works with a charity in South Sudan.

'A quick chat with Laura and the ball was in motion. The Fahy Rovers kit was on its way to Rumbek, South Sudan, in Laura's luggage!

'The kit was gratefully accepted by Sister Orla Tracey who does amazing charity work on the ground in Rumbek, where it was swiftly put to good use.

'Great to see innovative ways to ensure our football kits are put to good use and stay out of landfill.

'Well done to our first team manager John Creaby and all involved who made this happen.'
