Derek Walsh steps down as Mayo senior hurling manager

Mayo senior hurling manager Derek Walsh has informed Mayo GAA County Board that he is not seeking another year as manager of the Mayo GAA senior hurling team and is stepping down as manager with immediate effect.

Walsh was initially appointed in 2018 on a three year contract and in his first term brought the Mayo hurlers to national glory by winning the Allianz 2B hurling league title against Down and got to them to the Nicky Rackard All-Ireland hurling final at Croke Park against Donegal in 2020 but were defeated on the day.

In 2021 he guided them to the Nicky Rackard Final where they defeated Tyrone.

His contract was extended for a further two years last year and Walsh once again got Mayo back to GAA headquarters this time for the Christy Ring All-Ireland hurling final against Kildare.

Mayo GAA chairperson Seamus Tuohy thanked Derek and his management team saying they had continued to drive Mayo hurling forward.

“I want to thank Derek and his backroom team for their commitment, dedication and the huge effort they put into keeping Mayo hurling competitive over the past few years.’ commented Seamus.

Mayo GAA will now ask the hurling clubs in the county to nominate suitable candidates for the position of hiring manager and after consultation with the hurling board the candidates will be shortlisted and interviewed for the position before recommendations are brought before a full meeting of the county board.
