New EV charging points to be rolled out across Mayo
MAYO County Council is close to agreeing a deal with Irish company EasyGo for the installation of Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers around the county.
Currently there are just four fast chargers in place but this will increase to 19 with 15 new 50KW EV charge points.
The company will also install another six AC chargers in other locations where the ESB power isn't strong enough to support the fast chargers (DC).
EasyGo have committed to spending approximately €1 million on the charge points with no cost to the council.
They hope is have all operational before next summer.
The news was delivered to elected members of the Westport-Belmullet Municipal District at their monthly meeting this week.
Welcoming the announcement, Westport Councillor Peter Flynn explained: “On completion in Q2 2023 Mayo will be most likely the third county in Ireland to have such an extensive EV network. It is great news for residents who have EVs but it will also be fantastic boost to people in the tourism sector in attracting people with EVs to Mayo.
“I am delighted that this is not just about the big towns but locations like Newport, Louisburgh and Mulranny will also be included in the rollout.”
In Westport town centre, two new locations have been identified but, critically, he said, EasyGo have agreed to install one at The Quay which will be welcome news for apartments owners and the business community.
“Huge credit must go the climate action team in Mayo County Council and the municipal district teams who have engaged positively on this exciting initiative for the county,” said Councillor Flynn.
