Family and friends remember Joe on fifth anniversary of his death

THIS Friday, August 12, marks the fifth anniversary of the death of Joe Deacy.

Marred in controversy surrounding the events that happened at Gortnasillagh, near Swinford, where he was found having suffered injuries, no one has been brought to account for his death.

To mark this anniversary, Joe’s family, friends and teammates from St. Colmcille's GAC in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, will again make their way to Mayo and play in a memorial match in the NUIG Connacht Air Dome on Saturday, August 13, following a walk at Gortnasillagh.

On Friday, over 35 of those who have made the journey will also climb Croagh Patrick.

They begin shortly after 2 p.m. in memory of Joe, to raise awareness, but also to embody the adventurous side that he so often displayed. They will adorn their ‘Hammers’ Gaelic jerseys, adapted to remember his favourite soccer team, along with carrying the message ‘Justice For Joe’.

This statement is synonymous with the family’s plea for answers and justice. The slogan can also be seen along the N5, on the Castlebar road outside Swinford.

Joe will always be remembered by his family and friends as a bright, fun, and ever-smiling individual who made it his business to have the widest of friendship groups. The weekend will emphasise this to all those who come along, and those who may know more than is currently within the public domain.

The Deacy family welcome all to join them this weekend.
