Death of renowned Mayo handballer Peadar McGee
THE death has occurred of one of Ireland’s greatest ever handballers, Peter (Peadar) McGee from Newport.
Peadar dominated the sport for over 20 years and during his career he won 17 All-Ireland medals, 10 men's singles medals and seven doubles.
He was also instrumental in setting up the famous McGee International Handball Tournament, a competition which ended in 2017.
An all round sportsman, who also excelled at racquetball, he was widely respected in sporting circles.
Peadar is survived by his wife Maureen, sons Colum and Darragh, daughter-in-law Fiona, grandsons Shane and Christopher and granddaughter Holly, brother Willie, sisters Mary, Angela, Teresa, Kathleen and Agnes, sister-in-law Elizabeth, brothers-in-law Paddy, Padraig, Vincy, Tony, Phelim and Martin, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
Remains will repose at St. Dominick’s Funeral Home, Newport, this evening (Monday) from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m.
Removal from his residence at Sandymount, Newport, tomorrow (Tuesday) morning for Requiem Mass at 12 noon in St. Patrick's Church, Newport, followed by a private cremation service in Lakeland Crematorium.
