After 60 minutes on Sunday morning it looked like Claremorris were going to move out of the relegation zone and all but end Westport United’s title hopes as they led 4-1 at Concannon Park but five goals in the last 28 minutes saw United come away with all three points after a pulsating 6-4 win.

Claremorris were two goals up inside ten minutes as Noel Mellett headed in a Ryan McLoughlin corner on four minutes and Simon Butler got his first of the day five minutes later as headed in a right wing cross from Liam Gallagher. Westport responded when Harrison Quinn pulled a goal back on twenty minutes to leave a goal between the sides at the break.

Butler had his second of the day two minutes into the second half as he bundled the ball over the line following a cross from the left from Lewis Lally and he completed his hat-trick on 57 minutes when he got on the end of a flick on from Cathal Walsh to round Gary Cunningham before tapping the ball into an empty net to give Claremorris a three goal lead.

At this stage it looked like Westport’s title hopes were all but gone but the away side dug in to earn the win with a fantastic display in the last half hour. Adam Nugent began the comeback with a well taken finish on 62 minutes as he got his first of the day. Darren Browne then headed in their third of the day on 70 minutes before Patrick Moran levelled the scoring two minutes later.

Both sides had chances to find a winner but it eventually went the way of Westport as Nugent got his second of the day with two minutes remaining and then the young striker completed his hat-trick to make sure of the points deep into injury time.

Kiltimagh/Knock United stayed in touch with the sides around them with a 3-1 win over Straide & Foxford United. Two first half goals from inform striker Jack O’Connor gave James Costello’s side a deserved lead and Jack Mullarkey added a third in the second half before Sean Ruane got a consolation goal for the away side as Kiltimagh/Knock got their eighth league win of the season.

Ballina Town kept their own title hopes alive with a 1-0 win over a stubborn Glenhest Rovers side on Sunday afternoon. Stevin Melvin scored the only goal of the game for Mark Beattie’s side but they had to wait until the final quarter of the game before it finally arrived when Melvin headed in a cross from the right wing.

Manulla and Castlebar Celtic had to settle for a share of the spoils as both Aiden Dunleavy and Jordan Loftus hit two goals each in a 2-2 draw in Carramore. Dunleavy gave Manulla a goal lead at the break and he doubled their advantage early in the second half as the home side looked like they were going to claim the points. Crossmolina picked up another three points with their sixth win in a row after an impressive 4-0 win over Ballyglass in Michael Keaveney Park on Saturday evening. Two goals in either half were for Michael Canavan’s side moved them back to the top of the table for a few hours at least.

Kevin Campbell gave them the lead just after the quarter hour mark as he slotted home a penalty and the second arrived inutes before the break when Kian Walsh pounced on an error in the Ballyglass defence to nip in between the keeper and a defender to tap the ball into an empty net.

Ian Gordon got the third as he headed in a corner and Vlad Gorgetsky completed the scoring as he kept his nerve to slot the ball past the keeper when he found himself clear of the Ballyglass defence.

Moy Villa kept themselves in the race for promotion with a big win away against Swinford as they continue to chase down Crossmolina and Conn Rangers at the top of the table.

The visitors took the lead after 10 seconds when Stephen Moyles intercepted a loose pass and he found Luke Ruane who danced around the on-rushing keeper to grab his first of the day. Villa made it 2-0 shortly after when Lee Corcoran picked up the ball in the middle of pitch and his powerful drive from distance found the back of the net courtesy of the post. John Durkan continued his goal scoring form as he cooly slotted home a Ciarán Gaughan through ball. Luke Ruane made it 4-0 at half time with a bullet of a strike to the top corner when he was picked out after Matthew Dillon’s marauding run down the right side of the pitch.

Ciarán Gaughan converted a penalty early in the second half on his return from injury as Tony Loftus was adjudged to have been fouled in the box. Swinford managed to pull a goal back through a good finish of their own but that was to be as good as it got for the home side. Gaughan turned provider again shortly after as his in-swinging corner found Tony Loftus who volleyed home to make it six.

Loftus again made it seven, after Ruane’s trickery was too much for the Swinford defence as he squared for the former to tap into an empty net. John Durkan made it eight when he collected a pass from Stephen Moyles and dribbled effortlessly passed the Swinford defenders before burying home a left-footed effort to the bottom right hand corner. Ruane completed his hat trick after Moyles found Gaughan on the right wing and Gaughan’s cross into the box was met by Ruane who volleyed home his third of the game.

The pick of the goals was saved to last after Tony Loftus completed his own hat trick when he picked the ball up on the left wing dribbling passed the defenders before rifling home a tremendous strike to the top corner to complete the scoring (Report courtesy of Moy Villa Facebook Page)

The second goal came from a deflection off a Westport defender as Colm Rutledge’s cross found the back of the net before Rutledge was the provider for their third when he set up PJ Gilmartin to score. Substitutes Sean Holmes and Ciaran Brogan combined for the final goal of the day as Brendan McDonagh’s side laid down another marker after an impressive run of form over the last few weeks.

Fahy Rovers secured their Premier Division status with a 5-1 win over Kiltimagh/Knock United B on Sunday evening. Simon Duffy scored twice with the other goals for John Creaby’s side coming from Luke Napier, Patrick O’Connell and Sean Gallagher.

On Sunday Ballinrobe Town travelled to United Park where they knew that a point against Westport United C would clinch the League One Title and they left with all three and the League One Cup after a 3-0 win.

Any nerves they had were quickly settled as Shane Ryan gave them the lead after only two minutes and despite it staying that way until the second half the away side always looked like they were going to have too much for Michael Horan’s young team. Jonathon Lawrence excellent strike from the edge of the area gave them a two-goal advantage before Connor Ryan added a third to ensure they would be crowned champions with a game to spare.

McDonnell Construction League Two
