Contractors appointed for Westport flood relief scheme

CONTRACTORS have been appointed for the Westport flood relief scheme.

The contractors, Cunningham Civil and Marine Ltd., expect to be on site within two weeks, with a completion date early in 2023.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Michael Ring stated: “I am very pleased that the contractors have been appointed for the Westport flood relief scheme.

“Mayo County Council have appointed Cunningham Civil and Marine Ltd. to construct the scheme. Delivered in partnership with the OPW, the scheme has a budget of €1.181 million and is part of the government’s investment under Project Ireland 2040 of €1.3 billion in flood relief to protect communities across Ireland from the impacts of climate change through future-proofed, adaptable flood relief schemes.”

Mayo County Council met with the contractors, he explained, and they issued the letter of acceptance and the signed form of tender to them.

The contractor expects to be on site within two weeks with a likely completion of end of quarter one 2023.

Thirty-six homes in the two residential estates of Cois Abhainn and Ashwood, Westport, at the risk of flooding will be protected once the works have been carried out.

Added Deputy Ring: “I was delighted to bring Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan to Westport to meet with Mayo County Council officials, OPW officials and local representatives in relation to this flood relief scheme.

“I am very pleased that this will resolve this problem for these residents once and for all.”
