Fundraising event for Castlebar golf teams bidding for national glory
Castlebar Golf Club has two teams competing in the AIG national finals at Knightbrooks, Trim, Co. Meath, later this month.
They are seeking glory in the Women's Junior Cup and the men's Pierce Purcell Shield.
The women's team is captained by Breda Mulroy and includes Sarah Prendergast, Leah Kerr, Sheila Baynes, Carmel Moran, Evelyn Brady and Lorna Irwin.
The Women's Junior Cup is singles format and Castlebar open their account against the Munster champions on Friday, September 16, in the quarterfinals.
The men's team is captained by Shane Rice and will meet Clontarf on Thursday, September 15, in their quarterfinal clash.
The Pierce Purcell Shield is partners format and the Castlebar pairings in their Connacht final success were Stephen Munnelly and Declan Prendergast; Billy Evans and Ray Prendergast; Tommy Lawless and Colin Dawson; John Gilligan and Johan Collins; and Tom Moylette and Sean Haugh.
To raise funds to cover the costs involved, Castlebar Golf Club is hosting an Open Am-Am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 9, 10 and 11.
The winning team of four will each receive a voucher for €250 from Golfstyle Golf Superstore, Galway, the main sponsors of the competition.
The entry fee is €80 for teams of four with a re-entry fee of €40.
There will also be prizes for the best all-ladies team, nearest the pin and longest drive for men and women as well as many other great prizes.
