Draws made for Mayo GAA football championships quarterfinals

The draws for the quarterfinals in the Mayo GAA senior, intermediate and junior football championships have been made. This follows the completion of the group stages of the competitions this afternoon, where much drama unfolded.

Westport, Ballintubber, Breaffy and Claremorris had all confirmed their last eight places in the Connacht Gold SFC yesterday, and they were joined by Ballina Stephenites, Knockmore, Castlebar Mitchels and Garrymore following today's games.

For Ballina and Knockmore in Group 2, the equation was simple – win and go through. They both did what they needed to do, with the Stephenites turning on the style in a 4-14 to 2-8 victory over Aghamore, which was enough to top the group.

The defending champions, Knockmore, were largely in control against Ballaghaderreen and eked out a 1-11 to 0-10 win.

Ballaghaderreen are left with a relegation battle, while Aghamore are safe courtesy of their victory over their east Mayo neighbours in round two.

Group 4 was also settled today, with the draw between Castlebar Mitchels and Garrymore (0-12 apiece) confirming the former as group winners and the latter as runners-up. Charlestown were the unlucky losers, their 1-12 to 0-7 victory over Davitts merely ensuring that they wouldn't be involved in the relegation battle.

The Mayo SFC quarterfinal line-up is as follows: Ballina Stephenites v Claremorris, Breaffy v Ballintubber, Castlebar Mitchels v Knockmore and Westport v Garrymore. The relegation semi-finals are: Ballaghaderreen v Davitts and The Neale v Balla.

There was much to be decided today in the Egan Jewellers Mayo IFC, not least in Group 4 – aka the Group of Death. With all four teams on two points going into the day's games, it really was winner-takes-all. Except that there wasn't a winner in the Kiltimagh v Kilmeena game, which finished level (Kiltimagh 2-9, Kilmeena 0-15). Kiltimagh were the unlucky ones as Kilmeena won through to the quarterfinals thanks to their greater scoring difference.

Hollymount/Carramore secured a big win over Kilmaine in the other game, 1-15 to 0-8, leaving the former in the quarters as group champions and the latter facing into a relegation battle.

Ballinrobe ensured themselves of top spot in Group 2 with a 3-11 to 0-10 over bottom team Kiltane, while Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin withstood a great comeback from Burrishoole to take second spot with a 0-16 to 1-12 victory in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

Louisburgh made it three wins from three in Group 1 with a 1-11 to 0-8 victory over Bonniconlon, while Crossmolina were far too strong for neighbours Lahardane and secured second spot with a facile 2-13 to 1-1 win. Lahardane have a relegation battle to fight, with Bonniconlon safe.

Group 3 had been decided yesterday afternoon, when Ballyhaunis and Bohola Moy Davitts ensured their places in the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinal draw has thrown up the following pairings: Ballinrobe v Kilmeena, Louisburgh v Bohola Moy Davitts, Hollymount/Carramore v Crossmolina and Ballyhaunis v Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin. Ardnaree take on Kiltane and Lahardane face Kilmaine in the relegation semi-finals.

Meanwhile, the fixtures in the TF Royal Hotel JFC A quarterfinals are: Swinford v Killala, Islandeady v Ardagh, Cill Chomáin v Tourmakeady and Shrule/Glencorrib v Eastern Gaels.

In the TF Royal Hotel JFC B quarterfinals, the fixtures are: Ballycastle v Lacken, Moygownagh v Kilfian and Achill v Kilmovee. Ballycroy have a bye.

The quarterfinals and relegation semi-finals will be played next weekend (October 1/2). See Tuesday's print edition for exact fixture details.
