Culture Night concert highlights from Mayo arts centre

The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar hosted a wonderful Culture Night concert featuring an array of local musical talent.

It was staged in conjunction with Music West and Music Generation Mayo.

The groups featured included the Music Generation Harp Ensemble, the Music Generation Uilleann Pipes, The Westerlies, Rolling Waves CCE, Connaught Quartest, Castlebar Concert Band and The Lunar Ticks.

It was a magical mix of musical genres, including baroque, movies, musicals, traditional and classic rock.

A large crowd was in attendance throughout the four-hour show.

The event presented Music West with the perfect opportunity to showcase some of the musical talent based at its new premises in Castlebar.

Musicians from all over the county travel to participate in music groups based at the new purpose built music facility at Unit 19, Breaffy Road Retail Park.

Music West is home to the Castlebar Concert Band, Mayo Concert Orchestra, Mayo Youth Orchestra, Castlebar Training Band and a range of other musical ensemble and choirs including the Rolling Waves traditional music organisation.

The Culture Night evening included youth performances from Mayo Music Generation's (MGM) Mayo Harp Ensemble under the direction of Grainne Hambley, followed by an uilleann pipes duet featuring Muiris Ò Clochartaigh and Rosa Mayock Harris who are part of the MGM Uileann Pipe program.

From trad to baroque, The Westerlies trumpet ensemble with clarinet performed beautiful harmonies playing some well known classics from the period.

In contrasting style, the Rolling Waves Grúpa Ceoil, under the direction of John Kilkenny, performed a lovely programme of pieces interlaced with solos from their flute and harp All Ireland Champions.

The Connacht Quartet serenaded the packed audience with some well known hits from the musicals, followed by the Castlebar Concert Band's crowd rousing arrangements of popular classics from film and television, under the baton of their new conductor, Debbie Clarke.

This wonderful night’s entertainment was brought to a close with a selection of rock classics performed by The Lunar Ticks, a Castlebar based classic rock band.
