Court applause for new State Solicitor for Mayo

Louise Cresham has been warmly welcomed at Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court today on her first day in court as the new State Solicitor for Mayo.

Wishing Ms. Cresham well on her new appointment, Judge Eoin Garavan predicted she will enjoy “a long and distinguished career."

Barrister Diarmuid Connolly, speaking on behalf of the Bar Association Western Circuit, said he was confident Louise will settle into her new job very quickly and wished her all the best in her career.

Marc Loftus (on behalf of the Mayo Solicitors Bar Association) said Ms. Cresham had been a diligent solicitor.

He wished her the very best in her new role.

Patrick Reynolds, State prosecutor, said he was confining his remarks to just a few words: “I am delighted."

Supt. Joe McKenna, on behalf of An Garda Siochana, assured Ms. Cresham of the force’s continued support and wished her well.

Ms. Fiona Kelly (Mayo Courts Service) joined in the expressions of goodwill.

In a brief address to the court, Ms. Cresham said she is conscious of the standard of which the role as State Solicitor had been carried out by her predecessor, Vincent Deane.

“I am looking forward to upholding those standards." she continued.

Ms. Cresham was applauded when she ended her remarks.

Ms. Cresham replaces Vincent Deane who was recently nominated and approved by the government for appointment as a District Court Judge.

Ms. Cresham, a native of Castlebar, has been a practising solicitor since 2013.

She completed her degree in corporate law in Galway before she attended Blackhall Place and took up apprenticeships in the offices of Mairead Bourke and Vincent Deane.

Ms. Cresham’s predecessor, Vincent Deane, a native of Erris, had served as State Solicitor for Mayo since 2010, having previously been with the Chief Prosecution Solicitors Division at the Office of the DPP.
