Balla Mart hosts 50th anniversary weanling show and sale

BALLA Mart hosted its 50th anniversary weanling show and sale, sponsored by the Irish Charolais Society, yesterday (Tuesday), with prizes for the best Charolais bull and heifer per 100 kg. Both prizes were won by Declan Corbett from Clogher, Claremorris.

It was a record sale of weanlings for this time of year, with some excellent types on offer.

There were feedlot, factory, northern and online buyers, as well as buyers from all over Ireland around the ring.

Prices in the bulls was described as ‘very dear’, with anything nice making serious money.

The prize-winning Charolais bull, born March '22, weighing 310kg, and sold for €1,370. The show/sale was sponsored by the Irish Charolais Cattle Society.

Light bull weanlings 200kg to 350kg averaged €3.12/kg, bulls 350kg to 450kg averaged €2.97/kg, while stock 450kg plus made €2.73/kg.

One CHX bull born March ’22, weighing 310kg, made €1,370 - that's €4.42/kg. Another Charolais, 390kg, sold for €1,690, or €4.33/kg.

In the heifers, weanlings 200kg to 350kg were up and averaged €3.14/kg while stock 350kg to 450kg averaged €2.92/kg.

The best CHX heifer, with great shape and weighing 315kg, made €1,550.
