Urgent appeal for safety measures along busy Castlebar roadway

Castlebar Municipal District is examining the prospect of providing a footpath and lighting project to connect Castlebar Golf Club and the Ballinrobe Road at the Milebush junction due to growing safety concerns..

It follows the adoption of a motion on the matter by Councillor Cyril Burke.

He said the project should be incorporated into the town’s smarter travel scheme because the stretch of roadway in question in currently very dangerous.

Councillor Burke stated a section of the route outside Milebush Stadium was in dire need of attention and particularly so as a new social housing development is under construction on an adjacent site.

Supporting the motion, Councillor Ger Deere said a landowner had given land some years ago to make the access onto Belcarra Road from Balloor more visible for motorists as well as to extend the footpath to Lios Na Circa housing estate.

The blind access from Balloor Road to Belcarra Road in Castlebar.

Disappointingly, he outlined, this has never happened even though the volumes of traffic in the area has increased considerably due to extra housing and the numbers walking, cycling and driving to and from Milebush Park.
