Evictions carry a strong stench and should be banned

A MAYO VIEWPOINT: BY AULD STOCK

THE government is considering a winter ban on evictions.

Evictions should be banned entirely in this country.

Once and for all.

No ifs nor buts.

There is a strong stench about evictions in Ireland which goes back several generations.

The dreaded battering ram is not used at modern evictions.

Nowadays a more sophisticated method is used to dump parents and young children on the roadside.

A legal document is quietly slipped through the letterbox informing tenants they must vacate their house before a specified date.

There are no policemen standing by when the dreadful letter is delivered, as were the members of the RUC, Peelers, if you wish, in days of yore.

However, the end result is the same as in former times.

An eviction is an eviction.

No matter what system is used to carry out the disgraceful operation.

The government should do the decent thing and immediately permanently ban all evictions.

The word eviction carries a strong stench in this country, particularly in Mayo.

Old memories die hard.
