Mayo homeowners urged to explore government funded energy upgrade options

Mayo homeowners can reduce their energy use and monthly energy bills by upgrading home energy efficiency.

Significant government grants are available for individual home energy upgrades such as attic and wall insulation

Alternatively, homeowners can avail of a 'one-stop shop' service offering a fully managed solution for a complete home energy upgrade.

Currently, around half of Irish homes have a BER rating of D or lower, meaning many homeowners are losing out on comfort and savings.

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is encouraging homeowners to start their home energy upgrade by insulating their attic and walls to keep in valuable heat.

Homeowners who upgrade their home quickly feel the benefits of reduced energy bills and increased comfort. This is now easier than ever with significant government grants.

Susan Andrews, marketing manager with SEAI, explained: “As the war and conflict continue to have an impact on energy costs and availability internationally, and energy bills continue to rise at home, now more than ever we all need to reduce our use. With options to suit most budgets and circumstances, we are urging people to start their home energy upgrade journey sooner rather than later.

“A poorly insulated home will lose up to 30% of its heat through attic spaces and walls. So, a good place to start is with SEAI’s individual grants for insulation, with the immediate benefit of reduced energy bills because. Quite simply, your heating won’t be running as long.”

Andrews continued: “For homeowners looking to carry out multiple upgrades in one go, they should consider the 'one-stop shop' service from SEAI. This grant option offers a complete home energy upgrade solution, managing your project from start to finish – including your grant application.

“The benefit for the homeowner is that they will have one point of contact managing their entire project, making it hassle free. They will also get the grant value up front and will only have to fund the cost of works minus the grant.”

Concluding, Andrews said: “One vital piece of advice we always give homeowners is to shop around. And when you have the different quotes, make sure you are comparing like for like. If you do decide to go for a better upgrade, to say A-rated, this will likely be more expensive than achieving a very acceptable B2.”
