Achill greenway extension progressing

THE extension of the greenway from Achill Sound to Bunnacurry is progressing.

Five kilometres of the 10k route have been completed. There is a new parking area at the Sound, plus bicycle parking, which is near completion.

The last 300 metres of the route brings users close to Ted Lavelle's bar in Cashel.

One 350-metre section of the greenway is a boardwalk, which goes through a sensitive section of bog.

With the entire Clew Bay trail in mind, Councillor Peter Flynn, speaking at a council tourism committee meeting, said they had to get the greenway to Cloughmore or some other location for access to boats.

Achill Councillor Paul McNamara said greenways are a massive investment, particularly for the rural areas.

On the latest section, he acknowledged the support of the 90 landowners involved.

He also asked if the council was seeking funding to bring the greenway down to Keel.
