Public meeting needed to discuss future of county town taxi service

A SPECIAL public meeting is needed to discuss the future of the taxi service in Castlebar.

Local Senator Paddy Burke says the town will eventually have no taxi service 'if things keep going as they are currently'. And it's an issue affecting other provincial towns, he warned in a report in this week's edition of The Connaught Telegraph.

There is a day service in Castlebar, but there is no night-time taxi service, he said, while there are also issues around licensing and vehicle regulations that need to be addressed.

Another former local public representative has supported his call for action to be taken now.

Said Harry Barrett: “I propose a public meeting to discuss this.

“Taxi drivers are suffering and so are local publicans. The cavalry isn't coming to save Castlebar's night life. We'll have to sort this ourselves.

“People need to organise.”
