Two Mayo victims of civil war commemorated in Knockmore
TWO young Mayo men who lost their lives in Ireland's fight for independence were remembered at a special ceremony this week.
Lieutenant Thomas James and Lieutenant Patrick Morrison, North Mayo Brigade IRA, were killed in combat in Clifden 100 years ago last weekend.
A ceremony was held in Ballinahaglish Cemetery in Knockmore on Sunday in their memory, where members of their families were joined by a colour party from Óglaigh na hÉireann/Irish Defence Forces, while Foxford Brass and Reed Band played the Last Post.
An address was delivered at the commemoration by Minister Dara Calleary who paid tribute to the organising committee for the massive work they put into the event, and for giving him the honour of addressing the gathering in tribute to these brave men.
Said Minister Calleary: “We remember Lieutenant James, who was 21 when killed, and Lieutenant Morrison, who was 19, all of their colleagues who stood with them and all of their families, neighbours and friends who protected them and their colleagues from harm and who have kept their memory alive for the past 100 years.”
