Green light for homes on former Mayo cash & carry site

A FORMER cash & carry premises is to make way for a new housing project.

The green light has been given to plans to demolish the old O'Connell's Cash & Carry building at Horkan's Hill in Westport, to be replaced by housing.

Erris Homes Property Development Limited intend to build 10 semi-detached houses on the site, and they have received planning permission from Mayo County Council. In a previous life the building was home to the Pavilion Ballroom.

One submission was made to the council by residents in the nearby Paddock, which raised concerns about traffic congestion and safety on Horkan's Hill.

A planner's report found the project represented the redevelopment of a brownfield town centre site, allowing for the provision of good quality homes within walking and cycling distance of shops and local amenities.

The council considered this make the most effective use of the site, and enriched the character of the surrounding area, allowing for effective connectivity and creating a sense of identity and place.
