Call for columbarium wall to form part of Mayo cemetery enhancement

An appeal has been issued for works to be carried out on a section of the Old Cemetery in Castlebar.

An area of what is known as the Lough Lannagh Cemetery, located adjacent to the entrance to the walkway at the lake, has been left in an unsightly condition for many years.

Now families of people buried at the graveyard believe it's time for some investment on enhancement works at the site.

One of the suggestions being out forward is the erection of a columbarium wall to provide a suitable resting place for the placing of cremated remains.

This would also entail the creation of a paving and lawn area with ornamental planting and solar lighting.

Columbarium walls are becoming more commonplace in Irish cemeteries as pressure grows on the amount of burial space available.

People's final wishes are also changing with more and more opting for cremation over the traditional burial.

The matter is expected to be raised at the next meeting of Castlebar Municipal District.
