Mayo GAA clubs prefer return to even ages underage structure

MAYO clubs are in favour of changing the main focus of underage games back to an even ages structure.

At a recent Mayo GAA County Board meeting, Bord na nÓg chairman Daithi Gallagher told the delegates that the two proposals by Croke Park are to maintain the current odd age groupings (Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17) or to change it to even age groupings (Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18).

Mr. Gallagher revealed that 94% of Mayo clubs are in favour in having it changed to the even age structure.

However, after much debate, it was decided to get further clarification regarding the proposals – especially the suggestion that if the age groups go back to even and minor reverts to 18, players are not allowed to play senior football for their club. If it stays as it is now, minor at Under 17, these minors can play club senior football. Most of the delegates said they didn’t see any sense whatsoever in this.
