Moves to install CCTV at Mayo Peace Park following robbery on site

THE installation of upgraded CCTV systems at the Mayo Peace Park is ‘essential’ after a tourist was robbed at the location, a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District was told.

A letter was circulated by the park committee to officials and elected members of Castlebar Municipal District outlining the need for four CCTV cameras at the location.

The correspondence said that the committee have made a deal to buy the cameras from a security company but because the park is Mayo County Council property, a purchase order is required to complete the transaction.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said the installation of CCTV at the Peace Park would be essential as a tourist was robbed there in recent weeks.

Councillor Martin McLoughlin raised his concerns that the council has not paid sufficient regard to the park and need to look at it in a different way.

“The Peace Park is the poor relation of this council, it seems to have no interest in it. Only for the Peace Park committee, it would not be looked after.

“It is a huge local, national and international attraction and an asset that should be maintained at the highest level.”

Councillor Ger Deere said it was terrible to see a recent photograph of a delegation attending at the Peace Park standing in a puddle of water and supported calls to maintain it to a higher standard.
