Mayo hospital staff 5km fundraiser for Special Care Baby Unit in Kenya
MAYO University Hospital (MUH) staff are walking, jogging and running 5km today to raise funds for a life-saving project in Londiani Hospital in Kenya.
MUH has a long-standing relationship with Londiani Sub-County Hospital in Kericho County. This partnership was established 14 years ago to enable shared learning between healthcare workers in western Kenya and western Ireland, with the aim of improving health outcomes for all.
Today (Tuesday) staff in MUH will walk, run or jog 5km, between 6 a.m. and 12 midnight, to raise funds for a life-saving project in their partner hospital.
Londiani Hospital is in need of funds to upgrade their Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). Without a major renovation to the unit very sick newborn babies will be transferred to the nearest hospital with a SCBU, which is 50km away on roads that may be in bad condition and without use of an ambulance.
The hospital needs a newborn care unit that can provide around-the-clock care to sick or premature babies with the resources, equipment and specially trained health care providers that will give every baby the best possible start in life.
