Vandalised Mayo playground is in ‘wrong location’

A TOWN centre playground in Westport that has been targeted by vandals is in the wrong location.

It should be closed and a new location found, a local municipal district meeting was told.

Councillor Brendan Mulroy said when installed, the playground located near the leisure centre was state of the art. It has been redone twice since. However, the facility is being vandalised.

He had come to the conclusion that it was in the wrong location.

“Should we be looking for a different location for the playground and close the one where people are creating anti-social problems,” he asked.

The way it is it might be better to close it and find a new location, he suggested.

If the council had money to do it up, it would last three weeks until it was destroyed again.

Councillor Christy Hyland felt it was time to close it, saying it was a waste of money repairing it as the damage is continuous.
