Death of esteemed midwifery lecturer mourned in Mayo

The death has taken place of Christina Engel (née Killeen), Pound Road, Castlebar, and formerly of Ballyglass, Claremorris, Ballinrobe, and Wellington, New Zealand.

Christina sadly passed away yesterday after a short illness at Mayo University Hospital.

She was predeceased by her husband Colin and grandson baby Zak.

Christina will be greatly missed by her loving children Garret and Olivia, son-in-law Helder, grand-daughters Charlotte and Camille, sisters Maeve, Olive, Cathy, Una and Lucia, brothers Tommy and Danny, nephews and nieces, and extended family, to whom sympathy is tendered.

The deceased was much loved by her friends and colleagues throughout the world, especially in New Zealand and in the NUIG Midwifery Department, where she dedicated much of her career teaching and sharing her vast knowledge and love of midwifery and practicing as a homebirth midwife.

Respects can be paid at her home in Castlebar (F23CF98) on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass takes in the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Gerald, Mayo Abbey on Thursday at 12 noon followed by burial in the local cemetery.

May her gentle soul rest in peace.
