Mayo community mourns passing of missionary priest

The death has occurred of Fr. John Smyth, Templemore Lodge, Straide, Foxford, and formerly Columban Missionary in Korea.

A member of a widely-known and respected family, he died peacefully at Mayo University Hospital.

Predeceased by his parents Brigid and Thomas, brothers Joe, Michael and T.J. and sister Teresa, Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart (Sisters of Charity), he is sadly missed by his brothers Fr. Patrick and Fr. Malachy (Columban Missionaries in Korea), sisters-in-law May, Bea-Anne and Nancy, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, Columban Missionary Colleagues, relatives, neighbours and many friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Fr. John will repose in The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen, until 4 p.m. today (Tuesday) and at Templemore Lodge, Straide (F26 T623) from 6 until 8 pm.

Removal on Wednesday to St. Peter and Paul’s Church, Straide, arriving for Concelebrated Funeral Mass at 12 noon, followed by interment in the church grounds.
