Call to make C-Pen reading devices available at Mayo libraries
A CASTLEBAR councillor is calling on Mayo County Council to make a new reading device available in all libraries.
Councillor Ger Deere said the C-Pen is a small device that looks like a highlighter.
He explained: “You run it over a line or two of text that you want to read. It scans the text and will then read it aloud for you in a human-sounding voice.
“C-Pens are an invaluable tool for people of any age who struggle with reading for whatever reason. They are also said to be a great help in learning a new language.
“They are simple to use, without any digital experience, and there is no wi-fi or broadband required.”
Councillor Deere said they are currently available to borrow by members of Cork County Council Library and Arts Service for a three-week loan period.
“This is a fantastic initiative which could open up the world of reading to many more. I am calling on Mayo County Council to make this device available in all of their libraries throughout the county.
“For those who find it difficult to read, have sight issues or have dyslexia, the tool has proved invaluable while it has also been approved by the State Examinations Commission for use in exams, such is its value,” he commented.
