Mayo community in mourning over passing of Marie Burke

The death has occurred of Marie Burke (née Moran), Gradogue, Ballyglass, Claremorris, and formerly of Rinnahulty, Manulla.

A member of widely known and respected Mayo family, she died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving sons and daughters and extended family.

The deceased was mother of Senator Paddy Burke and Councillor Cyril Burke.

Predeceased by her loving husband Patrick, parents Michael and Bridget, and brothers Patrick, Michael and Vincent, she was greatly loved mother of Tom (Dorothy), Senator Paddy (Dolores), Seamus (Patsy), Michael (Susan), Noel (Bridie), Majella (Pat) and Councillor Cyril (Ann).

Marie was grandmother of Rebecca, Natalie, Bronagh, Lee, Aaron, Ronan, Colin, Evan, Nicola, Lorna, Cathal, Patrick, Leanne, Stephen and O’Brien-Burke Deirdre, Michael, Eilis, Derry, Siobhan, Patrick and is also survived by her great grandchildren, nephew, nieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends.

She was also predeceased by her sisters-in-law Kathleen Moran, Evelyn Moran, Mary Jo Durkan and Sr. Jane Burke, and brothers-in-law Fr. Tom Burke and James Burke.

Many warm tributes have been paid to her on social media where she was described as "a lovely lady full of goodness and kindness for others."

Her passing marks the end of an era for the village of Gradogue, Ballyglass, where she was held in such high esteem for many years.

Reposing at Balla Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4.30 to 7 p.m.

Removal on Wednesday from her home to the Church of Our Lady Queen of Peace and St. Gerald, Mayo Abbey, for Funeral Mass at 12 noon with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
