Mayo Meteors warm up for top of the table clash with their neighbours

MAYO Meteors continued their unbeaten run in the LLR Senior Men’s Basketball League with a strong performance against Athlone at the De La Salle Hall on Friday night.

Meteors' next game will be back at the De La Salle Hall against Ballina Braves, who also remain unbeaten, in a top of the table clash.

That games is down for a 7 p.m. throw-in on Wednesday night, January 4, and your support would be very much appreciated.

Despite missing their top scorer Stephen Crowley, Meteors were well in control of this game, Barry Redmond coming in with a big score and finishing on 15 points while Alex Evans once again hit double figures, as did team captain Daniel Nyland.

Coach Terry Kennedy once against took the opportunity to run the bench, using 10 players in the first quarter alone as they established a 19-10 lead, Herman Heyl on point duty directing the offensive traffic as usual.

The return of the Castlebar man from England, where he had a veterinary practice, has been a huge boost to the team, who are hoping to step up to National League Division 1 next season.

“The LLR League is an ideal platform to gain experience and build confidence, and I’m delighted with the response from the players,” said Kennedy.

And what about the derby tie in the new year against Ballina Braves?

“It does look lime Ballina Braves and ourselves have the edge on the rest of the teams in the league so and we are really looking forward to the test as they have been playing well and putting in some big performances and big scores. Both of us have been putting up some big scores so it should be a lively and entertaining game.” said Kennedy.

Against Athlone, Meteors won the first quarter 19-10 and pushed on to win the second 14-6.

Nyland, Redmond (who scored some great three-pointers on his way to 15 points), Alex Evans and James McMenamon, who had a fine game and finished on 14 points, all contributed some good baskets in the first two quarters.
