Death in Hong Kong of Mayo missionary priest Fr. Tommy Murphy

The death has taken place of Fr. Tommy Murphy, (Columban Fathers), late of Turlough Road, Castlebar, Korea, Taiwan, China and St. Columban's, Dalgan Park, Navan, Co. Meath.

He died yesterday in the loving care of his Columban family in Hong Kong.

The news has evoked a huge sense of loss and sorrow in his home town of Castlebar where he was held in such high esteem and had many good friends, with whom he enjoyed long walks and good conservation during his trips home.

Predeceased by his parents Pat and Kitty, sister Mary Monica and sister-in-law Mary, he is very deeply regretted by his brothers Padraig (Swords) and Michael (Castlebar), sister-in-law Anna, nieces, nephews, extended family, Columban family and friends, to whom sympathy is extended.

Many warm tributes are being paid to the deceased on the condolences pages of the death notices website, RIP.ie.

One stated: "He expressed his natural good humour easily while remaining deeply convicted about his mission and caring for all in need.

"The world he lived in was blessed by his presence and steady contribution over the years."

Another said: "He was such a lovely man, great company, a man of great compassion and understanding."

A further tribute stated: "A wonderful, kind man who was always a joy to meet. It was an honour to have known him."

Funeral Mass and Cremation will take place in Hong Kong.

A Memorial Mass will be held in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar, next Saturday, January 14, at 12 noon.

Columban Mass and burial will take place at a later date.
