TURLOUGH FOROIGE

Many visitors home for Christmas paid a special tribute to the young Turlough Foroige Group members who took on the job of painting the outdoor walls of the yard area, providing a colourful setting through a wonderful mural.

They finished by cleaning up the yard and providing a ground chip cover area with outdoor bench and seating unit.

The community centre is being used by over 300 people on a weekly basis, with the popular and long-running 25 card game on Wednesday nights. On various other days there are classes in yoga, pilates, jiving and dancing, karate, spinning and fitness, in addition to meetings of the Foroige, Turlough Wheelers and Turlough Card clubs.

AROUND THE TOWER

TREASURES OF TURLOUGH

Will famous Irish treasures associated with Turlough Park House be back on display in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life again in 2023?

A facsimile copy of the Book of Kells was donated to the National Museum of Ireland by the De La Salle brothers and was on show in the dining room of Turlough Park House, free of charge, for some years. It was lent to Dublin for a long period and since been returned, and was again featured on display in Turlough Park House for some time later. Now this manuscript rests in a metal box in storage at Turlough House.

A Johan Zoffany painting also associated with Turlough Park House, depicting George Fitzgerald with his sons George and Charles, was on display at the National Museum of Country Life in 2012, following a 250-year absence. We hope to see it soon back home in Turlough Park.

STATE OF THE ROAD

The Islandeady Village Enhancement Group has been busy lately talking with the TII, Mayo County Council roads section and WillsBam about the state of the top of the Islandeady Road (the L1811).

The intention is to leave the approach (entrance) at the top of the road the way it currently is with a post and rail timber fence either side, and the field that was heaped with earth at the top of the road will remain as it is, obscuring the view down into Islandeady.

It is the intention of the community council to challenge the response it received from the roads section of the council.

A community meeting will be held early this month and everyone is invited if you wish to voice concern/opinion about the way and manner in which the top of Islandeady Road is being left. Unless action is taken now, the road will be left this way.
