Galway name strong team for league clash with Mayo

Galway manager Padraic Joyce has named a strong team to take on Mayo in tomorrow's Allianz National Football League Division 1 opener against Mayo.

Team captain Sean Kelly is one of a number of changes to the team that lined out against the Green and Red in the FBD League semi-final two weeks ago.

There are league debuts for Salthill/Knocknacara’s Daniel Flaherty and Maigh Cuilinn’s Eoghan Kelly, while Cillian McDaid returns from injury to partner Paul Conroy in midfield and John Daly, who missed the FBD campaign, comes in at centre half-back.

Dessie Conneely, who captained Maigh Cuilinn to Galway and Connacht success in 2022, makes his first appearance for Galway this year.

Shane Walsh, All-Ireland senior club championship winner with Kilmacud Crokes last Sunday, is unavailable for the Tribesmen this weekend, as are Johnny McGrath and Ian Burke.

The Galway team in full is: Conor Gleeson; Eoghan Kelly, Sean Kelly, Jack Glynn; Dylan McHugh, John Daly, Daniel Flaherty; Paul Conroy, Cillian McDaid; Paul Kelly, Matthew Tierney, Johnny Heaney; Rob Finnerty, Damien Comer, Dessie Conneely.

Tomorrow (Saturday) night's game throws in at 7.30 p.m. in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar.
