Formal request for multi-million euro water upgrade in Mayo's county town

IRISH Water is to receive a formal request for an upgrade of a water main in Castlebar.

The water main runs between the Pontoon Road and Breaffy Road and needs to be upgraded for the future growth of the county town, says Councillor Blackie Gavin.

He highlighted the issue at the January Castlebar Municipal District meeting where he called on Irish Water and Mayo County Council to plan a multi-million euro investment to replace the main, which was put in place nearly 50 years ago.

There have been numerous bursts recently, said Councillor Gavin - Turlough Road, Springfield, Fortlands, the N5 business park, Breaffy Road and Rowan Drive, with hundreds of premises left without water.

“This water main needs a major upgrading as a matter of urgency for the future growth of Castlebar town,” said Councillor Gavin.

It was agreed to write to Irish Water.
