Mayo hurlers fall to Fermanagh

Fermanagh 2-18

Mayo 2-16

Mayo remain without a win in the Allianz Hurling League as Fermanagh came from behind to record their first win in Division 3A at St. Joseph’s Park, Ederney, this afternoon.

The Green and Red were the better side in the first quarter of the game and led 1-6 to 0-4 after 20 minutes, their goal coming from a brilliant strike by Adrian Phillips into the top corner.

Fermanagh responded well and hit back with a goal of their own through Jimmy Tormey to lead for the first time but the visitors response was instant as Adrian Phillips produced an ever better finish for his second goal, an overhead pull that left Fermanagh goalkeeper Mark Curry without a hope of stopping.

Mayo finished strongly, leading 2-11 to 1-11 at half-time, but accuracy in front of the posts from open play proved costly in the second half.

Another goal from Jimmy Tormey put Fermanagh ahead in the 44th minute and it would be a lead they would not surrender.

Cormac Phillips' accuracy from frees kept Mayo within touching distance coming into added time and the Fermanagh goalkeeper denied Kealan Gallagher a goal that would win Mayo the game deep in injury time with a brilliant save.

Mayo's next game is away to Armagh in two weeks time and will need a win if they are to make the final.
