The most loved baby names in Mayo revealed

New analysis of baby name data from the Central Statistics Office by leading name label manufacturer, My Nametags, reveals the names that have stood the test of time and remained consistently popular with Irish parents over the last 50 years.

A total of 27 names have made it into the top 100 most popular names every year since 1972.

The list includes a number of traditional and well known Irish names such as Cathal, Eoin, Aoife, and Niamh.

The analysis also reveals a shift in parents’ attitudes towards nicknames as given names, with 22 nicknames appearing in the top 100 for 2021, including Bobby, Harry, and Alfie.

This is compared to just one in 1972 - ‘John’.

Eighteen boys’ names made the list, compared to just 9 girls’ names, suggesting that parents are more daring in their choices for baby girls.

In fact, 291 different girls’ names appeared in the top 100 of each year for the past 50 years, compared to just 239 boys’ names, with the list of top girls’ names changing considerably each decade.

For example, Mary, Catherine, and Margaret dominated the charts in the 1970s, before being replaced by Sarah, Emma, and Laura in the early 90s.
