Consultation open on Mayo heritage and biodiversity strategy

THE Mayo Heritage Forum, facilitated by the heritage office of Mayo County Council, is preparing a new heritage and biodiversity strategy for the county.

Public consultation on the new strategy is now open, heritage officer Deirdre Cunningham told a council committee that deals with heritage matters.

There will be public information sessions held in each of the four municipal districts, in Castlebar, Ballina, Claremorris and Belmullet.

An online survey is also available which must be completed by March 8.

Our heritage is what we have inherited from the past, to value and enjoy in the present, and to preserve and pass on to future generations. It comprises: the tangible - historical sites, buildings, monuments, objects in museums, artefacts and archives; the natural - rivers and lakes, landscapes, woodlands, bogs, uplands, native wildlife, insects, plants, trees, birds and animals; and the intangible - including our customs, sports, folklore, crafts, skills, and traditions.
