Prayers offered in Mayo for bishop shot dead in Los Angeles
Prayers have been offered at Masses in St. James' Church, Charlestown, in honour of much beloved Catholic bishop, David O'Connell, was shot dead last Sunday in Los Angeles.
The deceased had connections with the east Mayo town.
His sister-in-law Paula, wife of the late bishop's brother Ciaran, is a native of Charlestown.
She is daughter of Marty and the late Bernadine Fleming, Brackloonagh, Charlestown.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the O'Connell family on their devastating loss.
Aged 69, Bishop O'Connell, a native of Glanmire, Co. Cork, had been living and working in California since 1979. He was widely known for his advocacy of the poor.
A man has been arrested in connection with his shooting and investigations are ongoing.
A tribute to Bishop O'Connell on the Facebook page of Knock Shrine said the deceased spent most of his four decades as a priest ministering in the inner city of Los Angelus.
"He was very humble and remarkable man who left an impression on all who were fortunate enough to spend time with him.
"May he rest in peace," the tribute added.
