Mayo county town in mourning over passing of a much-loved personality

The death has taken place of William “Bill” Waldron, Greenfields, Pontoon Road, Castlebar, and formerly of James Street, Claremorris.

He died peacefully yesterday at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Aged 89, Billy was an affable and courteous personality who endeared himself to everyone with whom he came into contact.

A passionate GAA man, he helped out in the coaching of underage teams at Castlebar Mitchels for many years.

He was a member of the board of directors of Castlebar Voluntary Social Services and gave lifelong service to the organisation which reaches out to so many people through his meals-on-wheels and other services.

In his spare time, Billy enjoyed nothing more than a day's angling.

He made national media headlines in May 2020 when he was discharged from Mayo University Hospital after recovering from Covid-19, providing much-needed inspiration to many elderly people who contracted the virus across Ireland at the time.

There were joyous scenes as neighbours and friends gathered outside his home to greet him.

It was a special moment during the challenging lockdown period.

Mr. Waldron described the occasion as 'the happiest day of his life' as he was reunited with his family after six weeks as a patient at his local hospital.

Billy is sadly missed by his devoted wife Agnes, his sons Liam, Conor, Thomas and Jarlath, daughter Ruth, brother Tony (Sligo), his adored grandchildren Laura, Abbie, Liam,Thomas, Oisín and Rory, son-in-law Dan, daughters-in-law Deirdre and Marcia, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, niece, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the Waldron family on their loss.

His remains will be reposing at The Coady Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5 until 7 o' clock with removal to The Church of The Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

Requiem Mass takes place on Friday at 11 o' clock prior to interment in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.
