Scale of Mayo hospital's waiting lists for surgery are revealed

Mayo University Hospital has a total of 1,365 patients waiting for surgical procedures.

The patients in question are on the facility's priority day case or in-patient list.

However, there are a further 10,027 on the Castlebar centre's outpatient waiting list.

The information was furnished to Councillor Michael Kilcoyne at today's meeting of the HSE West Forum in Galway.

The data presented to Councillor Kilcoyne also revealed that the hospital last year removed a total of 1,322 patients waiting greater than 12 months from in-patient/day case waiting lists.

This, the statement outlined, was achieved through core activity, administrative validation, additional in-sourcing sessions and outsourcing via the National Treatment Purchase Fund.

The hospital last year carried out 23,953 day case procedures, 1,501 inpatients procedures and 2,575 GI scope procedures.
