Premier Irish cycling event to honour Mayo legend next May

Cycling Ireland has announced that stage three of the prestigious Rás Táilteann event is dedicated to the memory of Castlebar cycling stalwart Tommy Devereux, who died last December.

The race gets underway in Navan on Wednesday, May 17.

Stage three takes place on Friday, May 18, from Ennis to Castlebar.

It is dedicated to Mr. Devereux, a cycling enthusiast who gave sterling service to Irish cyCling and Rás Táilteann over many years.

The route is one for sprinters with mostly fast and flat roads with two category 3 climbs thrown in for good measure.

It passes through the towns of Ardrahan, Craughwell, Athenry, Tuam and Ballinrobe before making its way to Castlebar, the finishing line being located at Lannagh Road in the town.

The race transfers to Charlestown the following morning for stage four, a 175.9 k.m. challenge to Monaghan.

It finished on Sunday with the final stage from Monaghan to Blackrock, Co. Louth.
