Mayo Young Sports Stars: Kilmeena footballer had a year to remember from the very start

At the start of 2022, Kilmeena were on everyone’s lips as many believed they could go all the way to the All-Ireland junior title after dominant displays in Mayo in Connaught.

January saw them book their place in the final after a dominant display over Offaly outfit Clonbullogue, with Kerry’s Gneeveguilla the opposition in Croke Park the following month.

Despite going into the final as underdogs, the west Mayo side produced a magnificent display to be crowned champions, with Jack Carney a colossus in midfield.

He was instrumental in Kilmeena’s run to the Mayo intermediate championship final later in the year and has become one of the Mayo’s leading men in a short space of time for James Horan and Kevin McStay.

He will receive his award at The Connaught Telegraph Mayo Young Sports Stars of the Year 2022 ceremony this Friday in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar.
