Mayo Young Sports Stars: Golfers dug out some huge performances in trying circumstances

The Castlebar Junior Foursomes team narrowly missed out on an All-Ireland title in 2022.

Having won the Connaught title by beating Rosses Point and Galway Bay in late July, they travelled to nearby Ballina Golf Club for the All-Ireland series in August.

They reached the final in Ballina but lost out in the decider against Royal Belfast by two holes.

Reaching the final out of some 390 clubs in the country was some achievement, but making it more remarkable was the fact that a grandparent of one of the young boys had a heart attack on the course while watching and was airlifted to hospital in Galway.

The young golfer, Aaron Quigley, played on and he and Conor Stapleton managed to win their quarterfinal by one hole, Aaron doing his granddad proud in the process.

Castlebar returned to beat Carrickfergus in the semi-final the following day and while they lost the decider, the togetherness of the squad members around their team-mate was incredible at a trying time.

The team members were: Aaron Quigley, Conor Stapleton, Tommy Heneghan, Owen Kelly and Ben Doherty.

The winners of the golf category in The Connaught Telegraph Young Sports Stars Awards, they will receive their presentations at a ceremony in Breaffy House Resort, Castlebar, tomorrow evening (Friday).
