Mayo music and singing teacher to be feted in New York
Castlebar native Dawn Doherty is to be honoured as Mayo Woman of the Year by the Mayo Society of New York on Saturday night in Antun’s Queens, New York City.
Dawn, daughter of Joe and Maryanne Doherty, Maryland, Castlebar, is proudly flying the Mayo flag high in NY with her thriving music school The Dawn Doherty Academy of Irish Music & Singing located at the Aisling Irish Community Centre, McLean Avenue, Yonkers NY.
Dawn was recently recognised for her work by the Mayo County Council at the Cathaoirleach Awards in Breaffy House Hotel.
In October, Dawn received the Irish American Community Service Award by the American Irish Association of Westchester, New York.
Dawn has a busy few months ahead with her music school.
They are on their way to Nashville Tennessee in April to perform outside on the grounds of the Grand Ole Opry.
Her students will receive music and singing workshops and collaborate with the Nashville School of Irish Music.
On June 5, ten of Dawn’s students are heading to sing at Carnegie Hall under the direction of composer Greg Gilpin.
Dawn is very well received in the Irish music world and she is extremely honoured to be recognized for her work and contributions to Irish music and singing internationally.
