Education and career guidance for all ages and life stages in Mayo

CURRENT and prospective students, parents, those in employment looking to upskill, or looking for work, and anyone in Mayo interested in taking a next step in education are invited to avail of Further Education and Training (FET) guidance services being rolled out by Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB.

The guidance service was highlighted by the newly established Guidance, Information and Recruitment team at Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI) who attended the annual Institute of Guidance Counsellors National Conference, held in the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in Sligo.

Raising awareness of FET opportunities across Ireland, the Guidance, Information and Recruitment team support individuals of all ages and at all life stages with free and impartial education and career guidance. The service is available throughout the network of 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs) nationwide.

Rosarii Molloy-Curran is the guidance, information and recruitment officer for Further Education and Training at ETBI.

Speaking ahead of the event in ATU, she said: “Across Ireland, we have a strong tradition of guidance counsellors who support individuals to make informed choices about next steps in their education journey. Our newly expanded services offer extended supports to everyone, including current and prospective students, parents, those in employment wishing to upskill in their current role or looking to return to work or to education.

“There is such a breadth of options and opportunities out there for learners of all ages, particularly across Further Education and Training which encompasses apprenticeships, traineeships, Post Leaving Cert courses, community and adult education as well as core literacy and numeracy skills. Our service provides a one-stop shop where everyone can access free, impartial careers and education information from someone who knows their local region.”

Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB is one of 16 Education and Training Boards across Ireland. Barbara Ronayne, guidance counsellor and coordinator of the Mayo Adult Educational Guidance Service, said: “Over the past number of years, we’ve seen a real shift in students exploring broader options for progression. They are now looking at all the routes available, as well as the CAO, they are becoming more and more aware that there are other equal opportunities available to them in Further Education and Training.

“Many want to earn while they learn, or to find an option to study which allows them to stay closer to home - our team of guidance counsellors and information officers can help everyone find the right pathway for them.

“Whether you are a student, a parent of a student, or an adult wanting to undertake a further education training programme, our team here at Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB are here to help.”
